Spoken by the Professionals

"Children benefit most from teachers who have the skills, knowledge, and judgment to make good decisions and are given the opportunity to use them."
-Susan Bredekamp, NAEYC

Susan Bredekamp is a true advocate for ethical work in Early Childhood studies and education. Teaching others assuring proper procedures and needs to child development and learning is why I am excited to learn more about her and her accomplishments.

"Finally, learning occurs within the context of social relationships with other members of the community who have similar, if not identical, issues from the realm of practice."
-Virginia Buysse, PhD

Virginia Buysse is well known in Early Childhood Studies and Education. Passion to advocate research and practice into the effectiveness of development and learning, she inspires me to take leadership and communicate in the community so that children are thought of, supported, and provided for as they begin to journey within their own social settings.

"I wanted to fix all the injustices in the world and I wanted to do that through teaching" - Louise Derman-Sparks

Louise Derman-Sparks is a professional in Early Childhood Education. From when she was little she wanted to work with children. She stated, "I just always love kids". Her passion to work with kids who are in poverty and who do not receive the resources needed for development and learning is a real aspiration. Professionals like Derman-Sparks give motivation to help not just some children but to ALL children.

This quote speaks to me. It not only points out the passion professionals and teachers have in development and learning to help children grow but it also proclaims that children have better opportunities in their future if they are given the same passion for learning as who is teaching them. It is a cycle. A teacher teaches a child and a child mimics.

  1. Your quote by Josh Shipp was like this story I viewed on another classmates blog about boy whose teacher looked after him and when he got into trouble she stirred him in the right direction and he became a doctor.

  2. See what happens when we aspire by others? Children can do amazing things if they are given the resources and chance as early educators seek to provide.

  3. I loved your post this week :) I competely agree with the quote that children benefit most when their teachers are highly skilled in their craft. How can we as educators educate children if we are not equipped with the knowledge to do our jobs effectively? This is primarily why I am on the fence about programs such as Teach For America but I digress.

Also, Louise Derman-Sparks was an inspiration to me during week two. I enjoyed watching her speak the most because her passion aligns with mine and we both entered the ECE field with the same premise- to rectify the systematic wrongs of education.

    Thanks for posting!

  4. Cassie - thank you for sharing the Josh Shipp quote. How true, and what a battle cry, that every child is just one caring adult away from being a success. I will take this quote with me!

  5. As I watched the media segment from Week 2, Louise Derman-Sparks interview caught my attention as well. Her passion is obvious as she speaks of her career and experience. I concur entirely of our ability to fight for social justice within the realms of early childhood. Instilling in children a sense of care for others starts early, and we can help to make that happen. Thanks for sharing the wonderful quotes!
